In Harmony - Festival of Britian Concert

July 2011

ihlsum3
On Tuesday 5 July this year, Southbank Centre’s Festival of Britain provided the backdrop for an exciting collaboration between In Harmony Lambeth and Southbank Centre. The very many children, teachers and parents involved in In Harmony Lambeth, were invited to spend the day at the Festival of Britain in a celebration of the end of their year. Over 500 people in total spent the day at Southbank Centre; from Nursery, to Year 6 pupils at Herbert Morrison, St Stephens and Wyvil Primary Schools; from parents and teachers, to the Lansdowne Green Luncheon Club. Herbert Morrison Primary School actually brought the entire school to experience the day!

The pupils were taken on tours of the Festival of Britain, exploring the many different elements of the exhibition site. They took part in gamelan workshops. They even went on a boat trip from The Festival Pier to the Tower of London and back!

The nursery and reception children took over the Purcell Room for a fantastic 45 minute performance to each other, their teachers and their parents.

At the culmination of the day, pupils from Years 1 to 6 from the three primary schools, together with the young people from the Estate After School Club, gave a massed performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The performance was a wonderful showcase to end the year. Close to 200 pupils were on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, presenting the amazing achievements of the pupils. They sang, they improvised, they played their recorders and they performed as string ensembles and as a full orchestra. The concert was a huge success and an exciting precursor to next year’s partnership between Southbank Centre and In Harmony Lambeth.

In Harmony Lambeth and Southbank Centre would like to thank the Head Teachers and teaching staff from Herbert Morrison Primary, St Stephens CE Primary and Wyvil Primary schools for all their hard work in making the day possible.

Winter 2010
This term has seen a number of exciting firsts for In Harmony Lambeth:

- A group of 20 wind brass and percussion players have started learning flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and percussion.

- 40 year 3 musicians from St Stephens and Herbert Morrison went on the first In Harmony residential course with Pro Corda in Suffolk. Here they spent two days making friends, playing in a ruined abbey, and preparing for a performance based on the Lion King – including composing, singing, dancing and making masks and sets.

- During the visit of the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra, In Harmony musicians had the opportunity to play some of Frank Biddulph’s pieces with them, listen to soloist Nicola Benedetti, and hear the orchestra rehearse and perform.

- We hosted the teams from the Liverpool and Norwich In Harmony projects for a two-day conference at Wyvil primary, where we were able to share ideas and where they had a chance to meet the young Lambeth musicians in their end of course performance.
winter2  This year’s Winter Concerts were held at
Stockwell Park High School on November 25th.
The year 2’s from St Stephen’s and Herbert
Morrison gave a lovely performance, and later
the Key Stage 2 full symphony orchestra
gave its first performance, with over 130 wind, brass, percussion and string players ending a fine concert with a rousing performance of ‘Blazing Strings’. The estate 2010 beginners
gave their first ever performance where they played Jewish Wedding Song with some
of the older players giving support.
The Key Stage 2 symphony orchestra draws its players from Herbert Morrison, St Stephens and Wyvil Primary schools, and the Lansdowne Green club which includes
children from other schools including Macaulay Primary. The musicians range from year 3 to year 7, with five of our senior players, who are now at secondary school,
returning to help the younger players, as well as working on their instruments and music tech. This orchestra needs a proper name – suggestions are welcomed. In
future we hope to be able to plan more regular rehearsals and performances.
In January the Fronter website will be up and running and we hope this will be a valuable resource for supporting the musical and social aims of In Harmony.
On December 9th, several In Harmony parents gave an inspiring presentation to delegates from across the UK at a Music Education Conference at the Institute of Education.

In Harmony Winter Concert

December 2009

The In Harmony Lambeth orchestra gave its debut performance on Monday 7th December to a packed audience at Herbert Morrison School on the Lansdowne Green estate. Year 2 pupils from St Stephen’s C of E Primary and Herbert Morrison Primary joined forces with students from Wyvil Primary, players from the Lansdowne Green class, a quartet from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and world class cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. Other children from In Harmony Lambeth were represented at the performance by projected film of their musical achievements.

After being welcomed by singing by young musicians from St Stephen’s and Herbert Morrison, the audience was wowed by music from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Minh Ly, a young cellist from the estate, took the spotlight to play In The Bleak Midwinter with Julian Lloyd Webber, and then the whole orchestra gave a rousing rendition of Dessi’s Dance. The performance was rounded off in style when the audience were invited to join in with the singing of The Lambeth Walk.

Children in the orchestra had only been playing their instruments since September. This debut performance will be just the start of a life-enhancing experience for everyone involved.

November 2009

On Friday 27th November, In Harmony launched its new portacabin with a celebration on the Lansdowne Estate.  Local residents and other guests listened to live music and shared delicious Portuguese food, as the portacabin was declared officially open!
The celebration also gave In Harmony the opportunity to pay tribute to talented music hall performer and local resident Dennis Hayward, who recently passed away.
The portacabin will provide much needed storage space for In Harmony, as well as an extra teaching space on the estate. It will also be used as a base for local teenagers wanting to participate in music technology and singing workshops.

In Harmony Lambeth held its first Summer School in the community hall of the Lansdowne Green Estate in Stockwell. The sessions, which took place over five mornings, were attended by between17 – 22 children each day, 88 attendances over the course of the week. Half of those who attended live on the Lansdowne Green Estate; several were from the year 1 groups which are part of the fast track programme at Herbert Morrison and St Stephens’ primary schools.  Each day started with a Breakfast Club followed by singing games, movement and the opportunity to play a stringed instrument. There was also a visit to the Southbank Centre foe a Gamelan lesson, which was enjoyed by the children and their accompanying parents.
The theme for the week was The Carnival of the Animals, which included a mask making workshop, resulting in a collection of exotic animal and bird masks worn by the children in the final piece which was performed to families on the last day. The feedback from parents and children was extremely positive, with several parents indicating that they would like their children to attend the after school classes on the estate which will start in early September.
