| On Tuesday 5 July this year, Southbank Centre’s Festival of Britain provided the backdrop for an exciting collaboration between In Harmony Lambeth and Southbank Centre. The very many children, teachers and parents involved in In Harmony Lambeth, were invited to spend the day at the Festival of Britain in a celebration of the end of their year. Over 500 people in total spent the day at Southbank Centre; from Nursery, to Year 6 pupils at Herbert Morrison, St Stephens and Wyvil Primary Schools; from parents and teachers, to the Lansdowne Green Luncheon Club. Herbert Morrison Primary School actually brought the entire school to experience the day! The pupils were taken on tours of the Festival of Britain, exploring the many different elements of the exhibition site. They took part in gamelan workshops. They even went on a boat trip from The Festival Pier to the Tower of London and back! The nursery and reception children took over the Purcell Room for a fantastic 45 minute performance to each other, their teachers and their parents. At the culmination of the day, pupils from Years 1 to 6 from the three primary schools, together with the young people from the Estate After School Club, gave a massed performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The performance was a wonderful showcase to end the year. Close to 200 pupils were on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, presenting the amazing achievements of the pupils. They sang, they improvised, they played their recorders and they performed as string ensembles and as a full orchestra. The concert was a huge success and an exciting precursor to next year’s partnership between Southbank Centre and In Harmony Lambeth. In Harmony Lambeth and Southbank Centre would like to thank the Head Teachers and teaching staff from Herbert Morrison Primary, St Stephens CE Primary and Wyvil Primary schools for all their hard work in making the day possible. |

This year’s Winter Concerts were held at Stockwell Park High School on November 25th. The year 2’s from St Stephen’s and Herbert Morrison gave a lovely performance, and later the Key Stage 2 full symphony orchestra gave its first performance, with over 130 wind, brass, percussion and string players ending a fine concert with a rousing performance of ‘Blazing Strings’. The estate 2010 beginners gave their first ever performance where they played Jewish Wedding Song with some of the older players giving support. |
| The Key Stage 2 symphony orchestra draws its players from Herbert Morrison, St Stephens and Wyvil Primary schools, and the Lansdowne Green club which includes children from other schools including Macaulay Primary. The musicians range from year 3 to year 7, with five of our senior players, who are now at secondary school, returning to help the younger players, as well as working on their instruments and music tech. This orchestra needs a proper name – suggestions are welcomed. In future we hope to be able to plan more regular rehearsals and performances. In January the Fronter website will be up and running and we hope this will be a valuable resource for supporting the musical and social aims of In Harmony. On December 9th, several In Harmony parents gave an inspiring presentation to delegates from across the UK at a Music Education Conference at the Institute of Education. |
