Lambeth Schools Music Festival
Festival 2007 During the two-week Festival 2700 children from 46 of the borough’s primary, secondary and special educational needs schools and ensembles took part in a series of concerts and workshops that celebrated the musical achievements of Lambeth children. The 6 infant and junior singing festivals and 4 instrumental concerts were attended by combined audiences of over 4000, and gave children a unique opportunity to perform both with and for their friends and family in prestigious venue. Children were also given the opportunity to perform especially commissioned works by composers Brendan Beales and Jonathan Vinten in the infant and junior singing festivals. This year’s festival was the first time both primary and secondary children have come together to perform a range of instrumental, vocal and movement-based pieces (for the Opening Showcase). Both participants and audiences found this to be an enjoyable and inspiring experience. Across the workshops, over 400 children from the borough’s primary, secondary and SEN schools were given an insight into a vast range of musical genres and traditions. Children learnt about Arabic and Palestinian music with internationally acclaimed singer and performer Reem Kelani. New Zealand based performers Manaia taught children about Maori music, song and instruments and Danca Da Liberdade from Brazil introduced children to a range of African and Brazilian dance, percussion and song. |
