Lambeth Schools' Music Festival 2011
Be Proud of Lambeth’s Young Musicians!

Over 2500 young musicians from Lambeth raised the rafters of London’s iconic Southbank Centre last week. From rock bands to barbershop groups, orchestras to massed choirs, Lambeth’s talented young musicians played and sang in 8 concerts.

The commitment, discipline, respect and enjoyment on display from every single performer did themselves and their teachers proud. The collaboration between Lambeth schools, Lambeth Music Service and Southbank Centre means that this talent can be showcased professionally, ensuring an event with so many highlights which will remain in our memories.

For the first time this year, 200 young string players performed to an appreciative audience at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and 7 primary choirs performed in the Clore Ballroom. Concerts of contemporary music included children from Lambeth’s special schools and short-stay schools, and a concert of large ensembles had several new school bands represented.

The week was brought to a fitting close with the massed secondary school choir which brought the house down to the sounds of Adiemus and Life on Mars.

The annual Lambeth Schools’ Music Festival shows what can be achieved when schools, a major international arts centre and the local music service work together to provide weekly music tuition, bands and choirs as well as preparation and planning for a major public performance. My heartfelt thanks to all the participants, supporters and organisers for giving us such an amazing week of treasured memories!

The videos of all the concerts are hosted on youtube here, under the lambethmusic channel. The playlists are split up by school so although there are quite a lot, they are easy to find. Feel free to leave comments but please make sure they are appropriate!

Feedback
The future of next year’s festival is by no means certain and so we would really appreciate it if you could fill in our online evaluation form if you didn’t already fill in the paper version we handed out on the day of your concert. Feedback from participating children is particularly useful when we bid for funding as we need to show the impact that festivals such as these have on the lives of the children who take part. We welcome feedback on any aspect of the festival and use your comments to improve the organisation and structure of the events. There are feedback forms online for teachers and students:

Instrumental & Primary Choir Concerts Teacher Feedback

Lambeth Schools Music Festival 2010
What an amazing extravaganza of music, excitement and energy! 2500 children and young people singing and playing their hearts out in eight performances over four days in such world-famous venues as Queen Elizabeth Hall, Clore Ballroom and Royal Festival Hall this week. Such a dazzling array of talent, commitment and hard work from so many of Lambeth’s young musicians and their teachers! Lambeth is truly a musical borough where it’s cool to sing and make music together.

The collaboration between Lambeth schools, Lambeth Music Service and Southbank Centre means that this talent can be showcased professionally, ensuring an event with so many highlights which will remain in our memories.

The impact of the annual festival (the 9th so far) has been to raise the quality and quantity of singing and playing in Lambeth - more schools are involved, more adventurous music is programmed, and the quality of performance just keeps on getting better and better, as schools, the Music Service and Southbank Centre share their expertise with each other, become inspired to try new things and raise their aspirations.

My heartfelt thanks to all the participants, supporters and organisers for giving us such an amazing week of treasured memories!

Brendon Le Page
Head of Lambeth Music Service
