Lambeth Schools' Music Festival 2011 Be Proud of Lambeth’s Young Musicians! Over 2500 young musicians from Lambeth raised the rafters of London’s iconic Southbank Centre last week. From rock bands to barbershop groups, orchestras to massed choirs, Lambeth’s talented young musicians played and sang in 8 concerts.
The commitment, discipline, respect and enjoyment on display from every single performer did themselves and their teachers proud. The collaboration between Lambeth schools, Lambeth Music Service and Southbank Centre means that this talent can be showcased professionally, ensuring an event with so many highlights which will remain in our memories. For the first time this year, 200 young string players performed to an appreciative audience at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and 7 primary choirs performed in the Clore Ballroom. Concerts of contemporary music included children from Lambeth’s special schools and short-stay schools, and a concert of large ensembles had several new school bands represented. The week was brought to a fitting close with the massed secondary school choir which brought the house down to the sounds of Adiemus and Life on Mars. The annual Lambeth Schools’ Music Festival shows what can be achieved when schools, a major international arts centre and the local music service work together to provide weekly music tuition, bands and choirs as well as preparation and planning for a major public performance. My heartfelt thanks to all the participants, supporters and organisers for giving us such an amazing week of treasured memories! |

Lambeth Schools Music Festival 2010 The collaboration between Lambeth schools, Lambeth Music Service and Southbank Centre means that this talent can be showcased professionally, ensuring an event with so many highlights which will remain in our memories. The impact of the annual festival (the 9th so far) has been to raise the quality and quantity of singing and playing in Lambeth - more schools are involved, more adventurous music is programmed, and the quality of performance just keeps on getting better and better, as schools, the Music Service and Southbank Centre share their expertise with each other, become inspired to try new things and raise their aspirations. My heartfelt thanks to all the participants, supporters and organisers for giving us such an amazing week of treasured memories!
