In Harmony Lambeth
Following the triumphant performance of the Simon Bolivar orchestra from Venezuela in 2007, the DCSF/DCMS cultural partnership under the chairmanship of Julian Lloyd Webber invited bids for three projects inspired by this model of social upliftment through music.
Three organisations have each been awarded approximately £1m to fund a project from now until March 2011. (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Norfolk Community Arts and Lambeth Music Service)
The Press Announcement was made at Herbert Morrison School by the Schools Minister Sarah McCarthy-Fry and Julian Lloyd Webber with musicians from LMS and Bonneville Primary.
Lambeth Music Service and their major partners, the Southbank Centre and Amicus Horizon will implement the In Harmony programme on the Lansdowne Green Estate in Lambeth. The plan is designed to incorporate all known best practice in teaching of music and social intervention, but equally remains flexible so as to adapt as knowledge is gained and as the programme develops.
The scheme will embrace all five aspirations of the Every Child Matters agenda for the children involved. They will perform both on and off the estate, forging a growing sense of community between the schools, the central estate, surrounding estates, parents and community leaders.
Regular performances to celebrate the achievements are the most powerful motivator for commitment and will be built in from the beginning of the programme, including local festivals and at the Southbank. The scheme will include musicianship classes, the establishment of a Children's Orchestra, sustained holiday music courses, events, pre-school instrumental tuition, mentoring from the guest teachers and resident orchestras, inspiring performance and composition opportunities.
The scheme will include children from several local schools and nurseries. Pupils from surrounding schools and estates would be able to join the programme by attending afterschool sessions, and those who already learn appropriate instruments will be able to join the ensembles.

The aims of the project fit entirely with the Every Child Matters agenda and will provide children in very challenging circumstances with a wonderful opportunity to excel in music, and we believe this will have a lasting effect on their life skills and life chances.
The Lambeth Music Service is building a reputation for innovative and inclusive music programmes, and has had a strong relationship with the orchestras of the Southbank over many years.

In Harmony Lambeth held its first Summer School in the community hall of the Lansdowne Green Estate in Stockwell. The sessions, which took place over five mornings, were attended by between17 – 22 children each day, 88 attendances over the course of the week. Half of those who attended live on the Lansdowne Green Estate; several were from the year 1 groups which are part of the fast track programme at Herbert Morrison and St Stephens’ primary schools. Each day started with a Breakfast Club followed by singing games, movement and the opportunity to play a stringed instrument. There was also a visit to the Southbank Centre foe a Gamelan lesson, which was enjoyed by the children and their accompanying parents.
The theme for the week was The Carnival of the Animals, which included a mask making workshop, resulting in a collection of exotic animal and bird masks worn by the children in the final piece which was performed to families on the last day. The feedback from parents and children was extremely positive, with several parents indicating that they would like their children to attend the after school classes on the estate which will start in early September. |
