Sing

MX Sing has grown from the successful ‘Colourstrings’ project that has been running in Lambeth schools since September 2003.  The project was originally coordinated by Gil Sharp who, together with project advisor Karen McKenzie and a number of tutors, has been working closely with schools in order to build and maintain the musicianship programme.
MX Sing is a child-centred approach to music teaching, based on Kodály principles, using singing and singing games with fun and learning through play at its heart.
MX Sing provides the opportunity for young children to be taught musicianship and early instrumental skills in an integrated way.

During the sessions children learn the basic musical elements of rhythm, pitch, dynamics, melody, tempo, character, form and style in an experiential and unconscious way which is stimulating and exciting for them.

How is MX Sing provided?
The tuition is provided by the school, with support from the LMS which provides class teachers and teaching assistants with intensive training with regular refresher courses, as well as a comprehensive teachers’ Song Book including a carefully selected range of suitable songs. Vocal examples of the songs by children and professional singers are provided on DVD, with video examples of the handsigns and the games. LMS also offers a visiting service to schools to support this work.
This empowers teachers to use songs and games during any part of the school day to reinforce other work, improve the quality of singing, and help embed singing in the school.
This provides a secure base for subsequent instrumental tuition in Key Stage 2.
